Baltimore — (TFN): “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what is for lunch. Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote.” This veritable Crown Jewel of wisdom has been attributed to Benjamin Franklin, who knew a thing or two about wolves and liberty.
The U.S. Supreme Court has just confirmed that U.S. lambs do indeed have the constitutional right to own and bear the prerequisites of safeguarding that liberty.
To most Americans, this concept had never been contestable: The concept that free men have the right to bear arms—be those bronze swords or a SIG-Sauer 9 mm—predates Aristotle.
It’s primal and yet current symbolism still does not sit well with certain people. Those who expect wolves to voluntarily convert to a vegan diet… and especially those who consider the monopoly of firepower their own exclusive right.
Historically, that latter group included those who look at the ideal citizen as meek, compliant and dependent underling who should be grateful for the sovereign’s protection, handouts, and generous if temporary loan of property.
The Supreme Court’s judgment—with all the conditionals of “reasonable regulation” it entails—omes at a critical time in American history. The American electorate is eager to sell out national security and sovereignty to a legalistic, knock-on-wood bag of goods of hope and change whose application in the past has failed on a catastrophic scale.
Demagogues and political charlatans have convinced the majority that success needs to be fined and private property redistributed. And that even the right to free expression needs to be curtailed to appease certain sensitivities.
Maybe there’s hope after all for America.
