Will this tiny company revolutionize the dental industry?

Today's Financial News - Posted November 3, 2008

What is found in everything from pyrotechnics to toothpaste, golf clubs to spacecraft, horseshoes to joint replacements?

Baltimore, MD (TFN): One word… titanium.

An incredibly versatile, lightweight-yet-strong, corrosion-resistant mineral, titanium is often alloyed with other metals with beneficial results such as lowering carbon content (stainless steel) or to harden (copper).

And it’s just as good with human bone and tissue.

One of the most exciting uses of the metal is in the medical field due to its ability to osseointegrate (human bone actually integrates with it).

This growth anchors titanium medical implants to the degree that they may remain in place for up to 20 years!

Putting their money where their mouth is.

The folks at OpenCell BioMed Inc. (OTC:OCBM) took this capability and applied it to oral surgery with the Ti-Foam Dental Implant System.

It’s basically a porous foam titanium coating that will allow an earlier placement of a restored tooth to be implanted on a smaller area of host bone than currently possible. And osseointegration should provide for a secure, strong base fixation.

In their 3rd quarter financial statement dated Oct. 24, OpenCell was operating at a $63,000 loss.

The company plans to launch the sale of the system no later than March 2009 and to judge by today’s almost 20% jump in stock price (still under $1.50, if you’re interested), penny stock buyers are paying attention.

It’s an interesting stock – it could revolutionize oral surgery as we know it. But such tiny medical companies can be risky. The company doesn’t have a website in place as yet that I could find, much less a PR outlet.

I prefer small caps with a clear message and proven profit-potential. I’ve complied a TFN research report on a few of my favorites, The 3 Best Small Caps to Own This Fall.
