TFN eNews 8/14/2009: The 3 Best Chinese Stocks Under $5!
Published via e-mail broadcast on August 14, 2009
In today’s TFN eNews:
* What to do about Blockbuster
* TFN readers suggest these mining and timber stocks
* 3 Best China Stocks
Dear TFN Reader,
“Just when it thought the competition was leveling off, Blockbuster (NYSE:BBI) faces another nasty barrage,” writes TFN stock maven Andrew Snyder this morning. “The company missed estimates yesterday, now the Street is forcing it to pay.
“Competition can be so mean. In a country where the government’s doing its best to make sure we all have equal incomes and resources, you’d think companies like Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) and TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO) would take it easy on Blockbuster for a few quarters.
“After all, isn’t it ‘un-American’ to force your fellow citizens into bankruptcy? Banks can’t force homeowners delinquent on their mortgages out of their houses. General Motors and Chrysler were saved. How in the world can we stand by and watch Blockbuster go under:
“Where will I rent my Saved by the Bell Reunion video?”
What to do if you’re holding shares in BBI? Andy has an answer for you right here…
***What are the best American copper mining and timber penny stocks you can think of? TFN readers responded to our call for suggestions:
As to the best copper stock, TFN eNews reader and HSC member Chris W. suggests: “Katanga Mining Ltd. (TSE:KAT) operates a major mine complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo producing refined copper and cobalt. The company has the potential to become Africa’s largest copper producer and the world’s largest cobalt producer. Katanga is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol KAT.”
Rob B. adds: “I’d have to say that my two favorites that I have made good money on over the past year are Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation (NYSE:CDE) and Southern Copper Corporation (NYSE:PCU).”
Dale H. writes in: “Sirs, The hottest timber stock in our country right now is Boise Inc. (NYSE:BZ). I bought some on July 15 at $2.14 and yesterday it closed at $3.40. That is a 59% gain in one month. I only got in the market on Oct 28 just before the elections, always a good thing. I put $10,000.00 in and as of close today it has grown to $19,479.00 .. That is a gain of $9479.00 which is an increase of 95 % gain 9 1/2 months. I doubt that is any record, but it ain’t bad for an old guy retired to a historic Fort Clark in Southwest Texas!”

Quote of the Day:
“But perhaps most appalling of all is the final message of the [President's mass] e-mail. Barack Obama says ‘To prevail, we must once more build a coast-to-coast operation ready to knock on doors, deploy volunteers, get out the facts, and show the world how real change happens in America.’ I don’t want to be presumptuous, but I think I may have found where all of the Astroturf supporters are coming from! I believe this e-mail is the one that has put together all of the fraudulent support!”

Today’s Top 3 Financial News Stories:
Bloomberg.com – U.S. Economy: Consumer Confidence Declines, Prices Unchanged “Today’s figures, including an unchanged reading in the cost of living, underscore the damage that the biggest drop in gross domestic product in any recession since the 1930s has had on households and retailers. With little sign that $1 trillion of injections into the banking system is feeding through to inflation, Federal Reserve policy makers are forecast to sustain their efforts until a recovery is secured. Stocks tumbled.”
FT.com — Spanish growth data disappoint “Spanish gross domestic product shrank 1 per cent in the three months to June compared with the previous quarter, and was down 4.1 per cent year-on year, the National Statistics Institute said. It was the worst year-on-year performance in any quarter since the current measurement system was introduced in 1970.”
WSJ.com — At Canada Border, Businesses Take a Hit “Businesses already reeling from the recession say the new rules, which require Canadians to show a passport or other internationally recognized documentation when entering the U.S. by land or sea, have resulted in a sharp drop in free-spending tourists crossing the border.”
