The Clinton Alibaba Connection: Flexible positions

Blogger’s Note: Day after day, it is becoming more becoming apparent just why the Clintons fought tooth and nail to keep their tax records under lock and key: To keep the vast network of Bubba’s sources of income from the unenlightened and the sceptical. Especially those sources of income that are diametrically opposed to the populist underpinnings of Hillary’s campaign.

After Hillary laughed off the embarrassment of having both her ex-chief strategist and husband collecting money to support free trade accords which she supposedly objects to, another bit of unpleasantness has emerged: Alibaba.com, a Chinese Internet company that has donated to the president’s charity is accused of collaborating with the government in its crackdown on Tibetan activists.

Nothing to worry about: A shrug, a hearty belly-laugh, and a call on President Bush to not attend the opening ceremonies will suffice to iron this inconsistency out, too.

Hillary Rodham Clinton has taken a strong public stance, calling for restraint in Tibet and urging President Bush to boycott the Olympics opening ceremonies in Beijing.

But her recent stern comments on China’s internal crackdown collide with former President Bill Clinton’s fundraising relationship with a Chinese Internet company accused of collaborating with the mainland government’s censorship of the Web. Last month, the firm, Alibaba Inc., carried a government-issued “most wanted” posting on its Yahoo China homepage, urging viewers to provide information on Tibetan activists suspected of stirring recent riots.
