This Week’s Financial News: Visa IPO, Canadian miner, gold prices and — stock market friendfinder?

Posted March 7, 2008

by J. Christoph Amberger, President TFN

Baltimore — (TFN): Another terrible week in the stock markets has come to an ignominious end. The U.S. economy may not be quite as damaged as the media reports imply, but even I find it difficult to see a silver lining in the data, the remaining presidential candidates — or the weather, for that matter.

But the TFN team had a full week doing what we set out to do… bringing you the best and most incisive analysis and the most useful stock recommendations free… via video, audio, and good old-fashioned text.

I took the liberty of compiling a few highlights for you:

Today’s new video: "Investing in Latin America: How to profit on the South American markets": Will U.S. recession and a low U.S. dollar spell trouble for Latin American economies? South America investing expert Juan Munoz of ADRTraders.com tells you how to play the current situation.

*** "Foreign Investment: The basics of international investing": We received several inquiries about investing in foreign stocks. TFN’s editorial director Stephanie Grimmett compiled a basic refresher of the nuts and bolts of how to invest globally.

*** As stocks plummet and real estate values are degrading, investors and institutions are crowding into the only assets that seem to produce profits right now. The gold bugs are rubbing their hands. But at what point will this last life raft get too crowded? Are they setting themselves up for another huge bubble implosion? "Fools Gold: Have we seen the top in gold prices?" asked Dominic Frisby on March 6, 2008. I think you should read it.

*** Once a week, we ask Oxford Club’s Steve McDonald to kick the tires of some of those much-touted trading services you get offered in your e-letter subscription. This week, his report was "Trading Strategies: Lou Basenese’s ‘Alpha Intelligence’ approach seems to work better than most hedge funds".

*** With U.S. real estate slipping and sliding, what’s happening in international real estate? Krista Das concludes her mini series on International Living by interviewing expert Suzan Haskins on "International Property Bargains: Mediterranean Real Estate Secrets Ever dream of owning a slice of the Mediterranean?".

*** This week’s most popular article was my own "Canadian Gold Mining Stocks: Tiny Chinese-Canadian Mining Stock Could Double by December". The story: A tiny $3 gold miner sits on $3.7 billion in measured gold reserves… and China’s thirst for gold could propel its stock price up to $20 by December 19, 2008.

*** One of the most searched-for keywords this week related to the upcoming Visa IPO. But our own Andrew Snyder isn’t quite as optimistic as his colleages. "Record-breaking IPO: Do not get trapped," he writes. "When Visa offers its stock to investors in just a few weeks, it is expected to draw a record-breaking offering. Thanks to Mastercards recent IPO victory, Visa plans to piggyback on the success. Unfortunately, the market is dramatically different now. Visas share price will plunge shortly after its offering. If you want to get your hands on the company, wait until after share price drops. It will not take long."

*** But Visa isn’t the only IPO we’re not exactly bullish about. Penthouse Media Group — proprietors not only of the famous men’s magazine but of quality sites such as Adult Friendfinder — also plans to issue shares. I don’t think you should bother!

For next week, we are putting the finishing touches on our scheduled interviews. Krista Das has lined up entrepreneurial guru and bestselling financial author Michael Masterson to ask him about the future of U.S. real estate investing. Laura Cadden has invited WaveStrength oracle Adam Lass to check out what his charts say about where the stock market is heading. And volatility trader Ian Cooper is compiling the latest stock market buzz.

Also: Don’t forget, our videos are now also available via video and audio podcast. Don’t worry, we remind you via email every morning at around 7:20 AM — so you can start your day with just the right dose of financial insight!
