Earlier this year, FDA approval sent shares of VNDA up 2,602%. Health Canada approval just today sent shares of ANIK up by 74% and counting. We’ve found 2 companies that may get the good news that will send their stocks soaring next month.

Baltimore (TFN): Investing in a company in the hopes of FDA approval for one of its drug can be lucrative.

There are plenty of stories of huge overnight gains on such news. Just yesterday, Swiss approval of the INTERCEPT System by Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) brought members of our premium service, Hot Stock Confidential, gains of well over 50%.

Then again, when approval isn’t granted or is delayed, the results can be devastating. Investors in ARCA Biopharma, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABIO) saw their holdings drop from $13.45 to $5.13 a share when the FDA requested additional information before it would approve a New Drug Application for one of ARCA’s products. Today that share price is down to $3.34.

So it’s hard to say what could happen for the following two companies, but they’re both worth a hard look…

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SPPI)
Share price (as of 08/20/2009): $6.25
Decision Date: 09/07/2009
Spectrum is looking to expand the uses for its drug Zevelin from a last-resort treatment for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma to a first-line consolidation therapy. Spectrum is hoping the expanded use approval will significantly boost sales.

Eurand N.V. (NASDAQ:EURX)
Share price (as of 08/20/2009): $13.85
Decision Date: 09/24/2009
Eurand is hoping for approval of its pancreatic enzyme replacement drug for patients who suffer from pancreatic insufficiencies. The cause could be pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, partial or complete gastrectomy, etc. Since the product was developed to address the FDA’s recommendation that such treatments should cause less variability in enzyme levels, it looks like it has a good shot for approval. And certainly, the need is there.

You think the risk is worth the potential reward? The decision is yours.
